1. Social StoriesSocial stories are used frequently in Sonas as a way to reduce anxiety and prepare our students for social trips and changes in the normal daily schedule.
Throughout the year, social stories are used in the lead up to numerous trips such as Cork Pops, going to the swimming pool in Lota, walks to Carrigaline Village and outings on the Carrigaline Community Bus. Feedback from parents has indicated that social stories are beneficial for preparing children for trips outside of school too, for example going to the barbers, cinema or shopping. Here is an example of a social story made in Sonas to help a child prepare for a trip to the cinema. Incorporated in the social story are both language and visual cues with a progression of what to expect on the outing. The visual symbols may aid understanding when the story is read aloud. |
